- Caregiver Support, Independent Living and Community Integration
Independent Living Studio
Problem Statement
Persons with disabilities and their caregivers face the following challenges:
- Limitations in developing the functional, social, and decision-making skills required for independent living and meaningful participation in the community;
- Greater caregivers’ support and guidance to plan for the future care and independence of their child or ward, particularly as caregiving needs evolve over time; and
- Existing services may focus primarily on functional training, with fewer opportunities for experiential learning in realistic home and community settings.
Solution
The Independent Living Studio (ILS) programme provides a structured independent living programme delivered through two tracks, supported by a Caregiver Programme:
- Track 1 simulates a home-living environment where persons with disabilities can learn essential daily living skills and use assistive technologies to carry out tasks more independently within a home setting;
- Track 2 focuses on building decision-making, social participation, and self-directed living skills through exploration of interests, intentional social interactions, and community-based experiences; and
- The Caregiver Programme provides caregivers with social-emotional support, regular check-ins, and information on available health and care services, while equipping them to initiate future planning for their child or ward.

Outcomes
The project aims to strengthen the readiness of persons with disabilities to live more independently and participate meaningfully in the community. Expected outcomes include improved independent living skills, greater confidence and autonomy in daily decision-making, increased social participation, and enhanced caregiver preparedness and capacity to support long-term planning for their child or ward’s future independence and care needs.
