Forest Fables: An Inclusive Forest & Nature School
Muein
Problem Statement
Children with disabilities often lack opportunities to practise essential daily living skills outside of structured intervention settings. This may be primarily due to:
a lack oftrained educators or professionals;
limited opportunities for learning in natural environments;
limited parental involvement; and
inadequate research on the topic.
Solution
The programme creates an inclusive outdoor learning environment for children to reinforce their learning and development beyond school, through hands-on experiences in nature. Grounded in opportunities for autonomy, relatedness and competence , the programme enables children to practise daily living, social, and self-regulation skills in real-world setting beyond the classroom or therapy environment.
Outcomes
The programme aims to:
Establish an inclusive forest and nature school pilot for children on the autism spectrum;
Extend learning and skill development beyond clinical and education settings through nature-based settings,
Provide opportunities for interaction amongst children of diverse abilities; and
Develop a resource kit, in collaboration with Thye Hua Kwan Early Intervention for Children (THKEIC) Services, to empower the community in supporting the outdoor learning and development of children with special needs.
