Enabling Adoption, Not Just Innovation: The Digital Dream Story

“We thought we were building a product with technology. However, we eventually realised we were building opportunities for children to learn, teachers to create, and everyone to connect.”

– Alex Tan, Founder, Digital Dream

As retirement approached, Alex Tan began reflecting on how he could give back to society. That reflection led him to found Digital Dream, a social enterprise that uses creative digital solutions to reshape how children with special needs learn, play, and connect with the help of technology. Its journey, however, is not just about technology. It is about creating more inclusive environments for children who are often left out of traditional classroom settings, and how the right support, such as the Enabling Lives Initiative (ELI) Grant, can transform a personal idea into meaningful, scalable impact.

A Trip That Changed Everything

While on a trip to the United Kingdom more than 10 years ago, Alex encountered early developments in immersive technology like virtual reality. What struck him wasn’t the sophistication of the tools, but the possibilities they can create for people and communities that are often overlooked.

As he explored these tools, Alex began thinking about children with special needs, particularly those who struggle with communication, attention, anxiety, or adapting to unfamiliar environments. He realised that many learning experiences are still designed for neurotypical children, leaving those with additional needs less engaged, isolated, and with fewer opportunities for experiential learning.

He saw an opportunity to create something different: interactive and sensory-rich environments that could help children with special needs learn, build confidence, and participate more actively in everyday life.

That became the foundation of Digital Dream.

Building From the Ground Up

Back in Singapore, Alex began developing the idea with a small multidisciplinary team. Over the next nine years, Digital Dream developed a series of immersive learning tools designed specifically for special education settings that encourage movement, exploration, collaboration, and social interaction.

The project gained momentum during COVID-19, when educators were actively seeking new ways to engage students beyond traditional classroom formats.

iCUBE: Bringing the Outside World into a Safe Space

At the heart of Digital Dream is iCUBE, an immersive learning environment built using CAVE (Cave Automatic Virtual Environment) technology.

Unlike a typical educational platform or game played individually on screen, iCUBE transforms an entire room into an interactive environment with striking visuals where children with special needs can move, explore, and learn together physically.

Its biggest strength lies in helping students experience situations that may otherwise feel overwhelming in real life.

For many children with special needs, environments such as supermarkets, roads, airports, or crowded public spaces can be overstimulating and difficult to navigate. As a result, opportunities for experiential learning, such as field trips and social participation, can be limited.

iCUBE bridges that gap by recreating these environments in a controlled and safe setting. Students can practise scenarios such as crossing the road, navigating public spaces through repetition and guided interaction, familiarising themselves with experiences they may later encounter outside the classroom. Teachers can also customise scenarios and design activities around students’ learning goals, supporting areas such as social interaction, coordination, numeracy, and financial literacy.

Through the use of iCUBE, teachers and caregivers have observed improvements in confidence, participation, communication, and willingness to engage with new situations.

In special education schools such as APSN Chaoyang School, iCUBE is used as part of classroom learning. It allows students to step into virtual simulations, interactive adventures, or calming environments, within a familiar setting designed to help them feel at ease with physical elements such as a dining table, sofa, or warm lighting.

Teachers have observed that students not only understand concepts better, but also look forward to lessons and are more eager to participate. Similarly, parents and caregivers have also noticed positive changes in behaviours at home.

For Alex and Digital Dream, these moments define success.

“The most exciting part,” he says, “is hearing real stories of life-changing impact. That’s when you know it matters.”

iTILES: Flexible Learning Through Movement and Play

As iCUBE gained traction, Digital Dream recognised that not every school or space could accommodate immersive rooms.

This led to iTILES, a portable and flexible interactive system designed to bring the same philosophy of movement-based, sensory learning and shared participation to learners, which can be easily set up anytime and anywhere in everyday environments.

Available in different sizes, these interactive units respond to touch and movement with light, sound, and vibration. Children can follow light sequences, complete memory challenges, or work together on movement-based tasks that build coordination, focus, and communication skills. As the activities are tactile and interactive, they can be especially effective for students who learn better through sensory engagement rather than verbal instruction alone.

Schools that have adopted either iCUBE and iTILES are helping students build cognitive, motor, and practical life skills more effectively. Concepts that are traditionally difficult to teach through textbooks or verbal instruction become more accessible when students with special needs are able to experience them actively. Both systems are also capable of collecting data that can support more personalised learning over time.

ELI Grant: From Support to Scale

The ELI Grant played a critical role in bringing iCUBE to life. It funded early installations in schools, allowing the team to pilot the system in real educational settings and refine it based on feedback.

Beyond this financial support, the team behind ELI Grant and SG Enable also worked closely with Digital Dream to strengthen the project’s development, credibility and visibility. They opened doors that may otherwise have remained closed – connecting the team to educators, community partners, and opportunities within the broader disability and social innovation ecosystem. This helped Digital Dream move from concept to implementation more quickly and confidently.

A key milestone was Digital Dream’s participation in the Zero Project Conference, facilitated by SG Enable. Based in Austria, the Zero Project is a global, research-driven initiative that advances the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), by identifying and sharing innovative solutions that remove barriers for persons with disabilities. At the 2023 Conference, Digital Dream gained international recognition as an Award Winner.

As awareness of inclusive and experiential learning grows, Digital Dream is looking to expand partnerships and bring its solutions to more schools, therapy spaces, and community settings. Continued ecosystem support will be key to making immersive learning more accessible to children with special needs across different environments.

Looking Forward: A More Inclusive Future

Digital Dream is expanding beyond special education, with growing potential across healthcare, rehabilitation, community care, and experiential training environments.

The organisation sees opportunities for its immersive and interactive technologies in areas such as elderly engagement, hospice care, sports training, and creative industries, where sensory-rich participatory experiences can support wellbeing, learning, and social connection.

To support longer-term scalability, Digital Dream is also developing the next generation of iCUBE with artificial intelligence capabilities that will allow educators and even students to generate and customise content more easily. This will make immersive learning experiences easier to adapt across different user groups, environments, and learning objectives.

After nearly a decade of development, Digital Dream has evolved from an experimental concept into a commercially deployed platform across multiple sectors, driven by ongoing product refinement, partnerships, and rising demand for more inclusive learning experiences.

Its journey also reflects a broader lesson in social innovation: sustainable impact requires more than funding. It depends on pilot opportunities, industry partnerships, ecosystem support, and the ability to demonstrate measurable outcomes.

This is where the ELI Grant’s long-term value lies, in helping promising solutions move beyond prototypes towards sustainable adoption and wider community impact.
